Description

Designer induction: how to be a designer in government

This course is for designers who are new to working in government. We will welcome you to the cross-government design community and you'll learn about the things that make design in government different.

We will not teach you to be a designer and we do not cover the technical side of being a designer or design theory.

The online designer welcome pack has lots of useful and interesting things in it, please make sure you go through it before the day.

Civil servants who are completely new to user-centred design and are not a designer, user researcher, or user-centered design practitioner should attend Introduction to user-centred design in government.

Eligibility

You must be a designer. This includes:

  • interaction designers
  • service designers
  • graphic designers
  • content designers
  • UX designers
  • front-end developers
  • people who do design work as a large part of their role

You must have started working in design in government in the last 3 months.

This course is now open to both civil servants and contractors or suppliers to government.

You must have a basic understanding of digital, agile and user-centred design.

What you’ll learn

You will be welcomed to the government design community and you will learn

  • about the cross government design community
  • about the support and resources available to designers in government
  • how we approach design in a government context including:
  • how different design roles relate to each other
  • how designers work in agile teams
  • about user needs and how designers work with researchers
  • an introduction to accessibility

Further learning

Designers new to the GOV.UK Prototype Kit or new to code should attend Getting started with the GOV.UK Prototype Kit after attending this course. Sign up to the newsletter to hear about the next time it will be run.

On the day

Arrive before 9:45am ready for a 10am start and we'll finish at 5pm. Lunch will be at approximately 12:30 for approximately an hour and there will be a short break in the morning and afternoon.

Please commit to the whole day. If you are unable to attend for the whole day, please let us know. We prefer not to have people leave early, start late or drop in and out of the day as it is unfair to the other group members and people on the waiting list.

There will be lots of discussion, group work and activities during the day. We take a 'learning by doing' approach to training. If you're not comfortable with this, please let us know and we can discuss how to meet your needs.

This is our code of conduct for UCD community events.

If there is anything we can do to enable you to be able to fully participate in this course or if you have any accessibility requirement scontact ucdcommunity@digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk.

Please be prepared to give us feedback on the session as it is always being iterated!
