Designs of the Diaspora
Explore and learn about the patterns found in Islamic art and architecture from different parts of the globe. We will draw the grids and principles behind each pattern, and design the patterns step by step using traditional methods – with just a straight edge and compass. We will also reflect on the theory and symbolism behind the art, discuss the heritage, history and symbolism of this beautiful art form!
Each week will focus on a different pattern, and will be derived from parts of Africa, Southern Spain, the Indian subcontinent, and the Middle East.
The course will culminate in a week of making; applying your chosen design to a product, or painting a watercolour or silk composition.
Age 12 upwards, everyone welcome. No previous experience necessary. Prices include all of the classes and materials (except for a small extra charge for materials for the last class (depending on the product chosen. Tea and coffee may be available to purchase at the venue)
