Event description

Description

What is the meaning of the detail in architecture and beyond? Are details simply a combination of the functional and the aesthetic, or do they have a broader role to play? In this series, speakers re-consider detail as intrinsic (rather than incidental) to how we understand architecture.

Our third talk is given by Elly Ward, Director of Elly Ward Studio. Ward’s whose work ranges from rural housing in England to a mini-golf course in Los Angeles. She has exhibited at RIBA and the Royal Academy, and teaches at the University of Westminster. Ward was previously founder and director of Ordinary Architecture, and also managed projects for FAT Architecture and dRMM Architecture.

About the Series

The Details series investigates the meaning and role of details in architecture and beyond. What’s interesting and significant about the detail? Can a ‘good’ building have ‘bad’ details, and visa versa? What role do details have beyond simply being the connections in joints, seams, and layers of materials in a building? Is the detail part of the whole, or is the whole itself the detail?

The series derives from a collection of booklets created by Wayne Head of Curl & Head Architects and published by The Everyday Press, in which architectural details from a variety of buildings – including the Barbican, No. 1 Poultry and the Bank of England – are surveyed, drawn and discussed.

Building from the collection of booklets, this talks series asks speakers to reflect on a particular detail – whether social, aesthetic, literary, environmental, political, or architectural. Far from being incidental, details can be where architecture connects to individual and collective experience, to social, economic and cultural life, to history, memory and identity.

The 30 minute presentations are followed by a 30 minute audience discussion.

Doors open at 18:45. The event takes place in our Seminar Room at No.14 Lincoln’s Inn Fields. We are in a Grade I listed, 19th-century building, so access is not always straightforward. If you require step-free access or extra assistance, please contact us in advance of your booking on admin@soane.org.uk or 020 7405 2107.
