Detonation! The Bombing of Manchester Walking tour
In June 1996, the IRA planted a bomb in Manchester that devastated the city centre. Twenty years on, Manchester is thriving and the area around this terrible event has been rebuilt and reborn. What happened that day? The Emergency Services were heroes, a robot device almost saved the day, a postbox was well and truly tested and Marks & Spencer's was blow to smithereens.
We will look into the history of Irish Manchester and how those same Irish helped to rebuild the city. We will see how this one incident was part of a greater remaking of Manchester as it came from mid twentieth century decline towards a new future.
