Synopsis

The Two Fifty One iconic mixed-use tower in Southwark topped out at 132 metres, making it the tallest fully precast building in Europe. Designed by Waterman, the project harnesses Laing O’Rourke’s unique DfMA capability in off-site construction to achieve significant benefits in buildability, health and safety, and construction programme. Key to the successful delivery of the project was the development of the ‘E6 floor’ system. The E6 floor system achieves continuity of reinforcement between precast concrete elements through overlapping headed bars, using minimal in-situ concrete.

The talk will describe the design and construction of the Two Fifty One project alongside findings from research into the performance of headed bar connections carried out at Imperial College London. Impact of the research will be demonstrated in potential further savings in cost and programme that could be achieved on projects like Two Fifty One.
