Event description
Developing a Deeper Understanding of Mental Health in the Workplace

About this Event

Mental ill-health issues affect one in four people in Northern Ireland meaning that 25% of employees in the average organisation will be affected by mental ill-health at some stage.

Cited as one of the leading causes of absence from work, mental ill-health is not an issue that can be ignored. Employers have a duty of care and need to take action to create an environment of openness, where employees feel they can talk about their mental health, and support staff to become more resilient.

Attendees will learn about some of the causes of mental ill-health, and related issues such as depression, stress, anxiety and suicide. They will be provided with information on how to promote good mental health, and benefit from guidance on how to put strategies and policies in place to help mitigate the negative effect these issues can have on business. Liz Kearns, HR Manager at Emerson will provide best practice examples on mental health in the workplace and the keynote address will be delivered by Dr Hugh Quigley.

Dr Hugh Quigley has written and delivered training programmes for various organisations on themes such as working with abuse, bereavement due to suicide and self-esteem. He has extensive experience of promoting health and wellbeing from an emotional and psychological perspective as an integral part of his professional practice of over 20 years in this field. While his personal specialism is the mind-body link, he works closely with a range of practitioners in associated fields to ensure a balanced approach to health care. His work centres around a positive health and involves the active promotion of health and wellbeing.

HR Manager Liz Kearns leads on Emerson’s Mental Health at Work campaign and will share best practice examples, and discuss how the business benefited from these and is always looking for further ways to create a culture of openness in the organisation.  Liz will also address how outside influences are affecting mental health in the workplace, and how Emerson are developing structures to better support employees.
