About the workshop
This interactive workshop explores how schools can develop a parent council or parent forum to ensure an effective mechanism for listening and responding to parents. We discuss what is right for your school and how to build an ongoing and positive partnership with parents. A range of case studies are presented and participants are supported to develop an effective strategy for their own school.

Why attend?
Would you like to build a genuine partnership with parents to ensure that they feel valued and that children are supported to achieve their best? Would you like to drive forward school improvement and be able to demonstrate to Ofsted that there is a mechanism in place to listen to parents? Hear innovative and practical ideas on:

  • improving communication
  • removing barriers to parental participation
  • finding the right structure for your school
  • maintaining momentum
  • evaluating progress and assessing impact

“Parental engagement in children’s learning makes a difference – it is the most powerful school improvement lever we have” Dr. Janet Goodall

Who should attend?

  • Headteachers and principals
  • Deputy and assistant headteachers
  • Pastoral support teams and family liaison teams
  • Staff with responsibility for parental involvement
  • Governors
  • Local authority advisers
  • Parents interested in taking this work forward with their school

About the speaker
Training is delivered by Fiona Carnie, parental engagement expert, educationalist and writer, who founded Parent Councils UK in 2008. She led a government funded project on setting up parent councils and has extensive experience of working in and with schools to develop parental engagement strategies and student voice. She has written widely about innovative ways of involving parents including Alternative Approaches to Education: A Guide for Teachers and Parents (2017); The Parent Participation Handbook (2011); and Harnessing Parent Power (2013).

Please note that cancellations within two weeks of the event will not be refunded.

“The effect of parental engagement over a student’s school career is the equivalent of adding two to three years to their education.” Professor John Hattie
