Event description

Description

The aim of this workshop is enhance participants’ understanding of Chinese culture and education and to enable staff to better understand how the role and approach of lecturers in the UK can be a cause of confusion for Chinese students, and will explore strategies to address this.

It will include a brief introduction to the present organisation of China and its cultural heritage and the role of the family and how it is changing as a result of the One Child Policy will be explored.

Emphasis will then be given to the Chinese educational system and classroom practices from early childhood to university. This will include the expectations and pressures placed on the students and the factors that play a part in this.

The session will examine some of the reasons Chinese students come to study at UK universities, their expectations as well as those of their families.

The everyday culture shock they encounter as well as the students’ experiences of lectures and tutorials will be explored. There will also be an opportunity to discuss potential conflict, ethnocentrism and misunderstandings.
