 Course overview:

 This course will explore the role of the Finance Business Partner within Higher Education.  It will allow delegates to understand the role and realities of the Business Partner, using HE examples and the competencies required of a Finance Business Partner.   The course will take you through ways to work more strategically. It will help you identify and practise ways to better develop relationships, ways of working and communication with stakeholders.   You will also work with a set of tools to develop and prioritise your activities.  You will leave the session with a personal action plan to put into place on your return.  

 Who should attend:

 This workshop is aimed at Finance professionals and current and/or prospective Finance business partners who desire clarity on the demands of the role, the knowledge, skills and attitude required and how to develop a blueprint for success.

 What does the course aim to do?

 Participants will:

  • Gain an understanding of the role of finance business partner within a Higher Education institution, illustrated with HE examples
  • Explore the role and realities of the finance business partner, mapping current activities and competencies.
  • Identify ways to operate more strategically
  • Identify strategies and behaviours for working and communicating with non-finance professionals across a large organisation
  • Be introduced to effective strategies and behaviours for building relationships and managing stakeholders
  • Identify what it means to add value as a finance business partner and how to demonstrate value.
  • Work with a set of tools to plan and prioritise activity as a finance business partner
  • Practise some key partnering skills including communicating the role confidently
  • Develop a personal development and action plan

 Who is presenting?

 Judith Strange.  Judith is a founder and Director of Develop Global, the leading UK consultancy specialising in business partnering and transforming corporate services.  With her business partner Shirley Dalziel she is the co-author of the CIPFA transforming corporate services toolkit and the CIPD business partnering toolkit.  Before setting up Develop Global, Judith had extensive corporate experience in HR, Development and OD at a senior level.  As a leading expert in business partnering she has worked across many different sectors and geographies including Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, Netherlands, Singapore, Spain and the US.  She has worked on finance business partnering and transformation programmes with a wide range of clients including Aberdeen City Council, AXA Investment Managers, Iron Mountain, PRS for Music, Middlesex University, the National Trust, NS&I and Vodafone.

Registration from 9am ready for a 9.30am start and a 4.30pm finish (refreshments and lunch included).

The British Universities Finance Directors Group (BUFDG) is the representative body for higher education finance staff in the United Kingdom. 

Our members are the Directors of Finance and Chief Financial Officers of almost all UK higher education institutions, and our events are run for them and their staff. 

BUFDG has the following objectives:

  • to be the recognised channel for the provision, analysis and dissemination of information and comment to all members and other stakeholders concerning best practice in financial management and related topics in higher education.
  • to be the pre-eminent source for information, advice, support, and comment on matters of financial strategy and management in higher education in the UK.
  • to promote high standards and best practice in accounting, audit and financial management in higher education.
  • to provide appropriate opportunities for training and development of higher education finance directors and their staff.
  • to work in partnership with related organisations to provide forums for discussion, consultation and exchange, both nationally and regionally. 

All finance staff at these institutions have their own BUFDG account, which gives them access to this website, and to information resources on training, financial news and all the latest reports and developments in higher education finance.
