Developing Core Clinical Skills in CAMHS Arts Therapies

2 day training

Date options: 24-25 April or 25-26 September 2018

(9:30-16:30 GMT)

This two day course aims to fill the gaps and further develop arts psychotherapists’ skills and knowledge base for working effectively in Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS) across the UK. Using the CORE competence framework for CAMHS and the NHS Knowledge and Skills Framework participants will be introduced to the range of expected skills required to secure and work with confidence with children, adolescents and families. Key topic areas will include: interagency working, safeguarding and risk management, conducting initial multi-dimensional assessments, developing and maintaining working alliances, using outcome measures, structuring short term work and working as part of a multi-disciplinary team. The course will emphasise best practice in the light of current knowledge of the effectiveness of approaches and interventions and seek to employ this knowledge within an arts therapies modality. Arts therapists will be encouraged to draw upon their existing specialist therapeutic skills and apply these proficiencies to the varied clinical activities required in the modern CAMHS context.

  • To develop key skills in conducting complex multi-dimensional assessments
  • To acquire some competency in delivering shorter term structured arts therapies
  • To promote skilfulness in developing and maintaining working alliances with children and families
  • To introduce relevant theory and practice elements from systemic and mentalization based therapies for integration into arts therapies practice
