About this Event

Developing opportunities for children to demonstrate ‘depth’ and ‘greater depth’ learning in mathematics

Aim:

To determine illustrated meanings of ‘depth’ and ‘greater depth’ in mathematics, as defined by the NCETM, whilst exploring use of subtle differentiation to meet the needs of all learners.

Background:

This interactive online training will allow participants to identify examples of what ‘depth’ and ‘greater depth’ can look like for learners in Key Stage 1 and 2, as informed by materials written by the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM).

In light of COVID-19, opportunities for all children to develop a deep understanding of key concepts will be explored, whilst additional layers of possible learning are added for those with more developed and sophisticated mathematical thinking.

This session will take place interactively in real time with participants using Zoom software. In addition to Powerpoint slides being shared, modelling under a visualiser and live discussion (including in breakout rooms) will take place.

Attendees will be sent supporting documentation either in advance or after the session, as well as being asked to gather objects beforehand, so that they can join in practically with parts of the session.

This event is suitable for NQTs, RQTs, returners to teaching, teachers who are new to this area or teachers who would like a refresher.

Nathan Crook

Prior to becoming a maths consultant, Nathan taught children in Years 1-6 across three Oxfordshire primary schools, including those in both urban and rural settings. During this time, he qualified as a Maths Specialist Teacher (MaST). It consequently led to him becoming part of the National College for Teaching and Leadership’s ‘small schools making an impact’ programme.

Driven by his passion for helping to ensure that all children access mathematics learning to the full, Nathan has more recently worked as an NCETM accredited independent maths consultant to support schools across the country in delivering high quality teaching and learning. As well as providing training, he continues to work alongside classes and groups of children to explore how they learn best.

Nathan also believes in the power of mentoring and coaching, around which he has refined his skills whilst working to complete the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) programme. He now provides leadership training to support schools with growing capacity.

In addition to his day job, Nathan volunteers as a school Governor and works on the Executive of the National Association of Mathematics Advisers, which develops his understanding about the national mathematics landscape.
