In 2017 Bournemouth University Disaster Management Centre (BUDMC), supported by the Independent Schools Bursars Association (ISBA), will conduct another series of regional workshops.  Each workshop is designed to help Heads, Deputy Heads, Bursars and Senior Governors to address two vitally important aspects of developing resilience within their independent schools:

  • Cyber Crime and IT Security
  • Building Business Resilience

An Introduction to the Two Key Themes:

 Cyber Crime and IT Security

Independent schools can no longer speak in terms of “what happens If we are attacked”.  Today it is necessary to sensibly consider “what will we do when our school becomes a target of cyber-crime?”

According to the Office for National Statistics 2016 Crime Report the number of organisations who have become victim to the current ‘tsunami’ of computer-based crime has doubled between 2013 and 2016; more than 5.8 million incidents of cybercrime in the past year alone.  It is predicted that these figures will double again between 2016 and 2019. The industry appears to be running out of superlatives to describe the situation.

However, independent schools are not powerless against this growing threat.  In this workshop you will learn ways to direct your teams to protect the reputation, organisational functions and personal information of your school by identifying ‘high yield’ areas for specific targeting of limited budgets.

Each session will be delivered in plain, non-jargon-filled language to provide you with a better understanding of the different ways that your school can be attacked and the strategies and actions your staff can take that will mitigate against the worst effects should a cyber event happen to your school.

  • How can we best raise our protection level?
  • How does a ‘cyber criminal’ think?
  • Which targets should we address as a priority?

This workshop is targeted at senior decision makers who almost certainly have no prior knowledge about cybercrime but who wish to grasp the practical options available to direct, guide and prepare their school to defend its borders.

Fire.  Flood.  Fraud.  Compliance failure.  Damaging inspection outcome.  Abuse allegations.  Cyber-attack.  Economic uncertainty.  Legionella outbreak.  Death of a pupil.  Severe weather.  Dangerous intruder.  Data breach. Electrical supply failure.   Independent schools in the 21st Century face these challenges, and many more, on a day-to-day basis.  In 2015 BUDMC, with the support of the ISBA, conducted a series of regional workshops around the UK designed to assist senior management teams from independent schools to create or improve their school emergency response plans. Over 260 schools participated and feedback from the Bursars, Heads and Deputy Heads that attended was excellent. BUDMC continues to regularly respond to requests from individual, or regions of independent schools requesting similar workshops on emergency response1

Schools currently carry out fire drills, intruder drills, table-top discussions and maybe even real-time scenario based exercises to test response plans.  However surely – isn’t prevention supposed to be better than cure?  What plans do we have in place to PREVENT these kinds of disruptive events from occurring in the first place?

This workshop will also examine methodologies for building up the resilience of your school so that it can bounce back quickly from a crisis or, even better, avoid the crisis altogether.  You will be taught to identify appropriate “mission critical assets” and, using examples from real-life, be shown how they might be protected and how to combine your methodologies into a coherent Business Resilience Plan.

As Field Marshall Helmuth von Moltke stated: “no battle plan survives first contact with the enemy” so taking part in this session won’t provide any guarantees!  However, it will give confidence to school management teams, governing bodies and parents that key members of staff have considered and developed plans to protect the organisation from all manner of crises, as well as having effective plans to respond to emergencies when they occur.
