Developing Social Reading Environments, Hosted by Dr Rebecca Austin
Event Information
About this Event
This session will consider the ways in which schools can develop ‘communities of readers’ through the physical and talk environments and opportunities that they provide for children.
Children learn what reading is about from the social environments within which their reading takes place. They need people who will talk to them about their reading choices and share their pleasures and puzzles about the texts they read. They need people who know about children’s literature and who know them as readers.
Rebecca Austin leads the Primary English team at Canterbury Christ Church University. She supports students in developing their knowledge and understanding of the teaching of all aspects of teaching and learning in English in the Primary school. Her research interests include the development of students’ academic writing and the ways in which students and teachers develop their values and practices in primary English. Recent publications include ‘Researching Primary Education’ and ‘Writing Academic Assignments for Trainee Teachers’.
