Event Details

In this complex and ever-changing world, what defines good leadership? And how can we, as L&D practitioners, play our part in ensuring that our organisations have best practice in place when it comes to developing tomorrow’s leaders today?

We have two speakers who will share their experience from working with a wide range of organisations and who will examine L&D’s role in developing future leaders.

Firstly, Simon Merrell will run an interactive session on how to design a leader event development programme – one that develops the skills your organisation needs now and for the future. This will include looking at the various types of leadership development, examining the external and the internal contexts, and considering the importance of defining the purpose and crucially, how you are going to measure its success.

Secondly, Peter Milligan will consider what it means to be a leader in a world that is volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous. So how can we help people who are stepping up into bigger roles to develop the resilience and wisdom they need to deal with the contradictions, pressure and instability they inevitably face? Peter will explore the implications for leadership development from 3 connected perspectives: the maturing leader, the outdated organisation and the power of systemic coaching, and consider how to “build curiosity, courage and confidence in a complex and changing world”.

Simon Merrell, Director of Merrell People Ltd, has been involved in leadership development for over 12 years. He has worked as a consultant to a range of businesses and more recently has spent time heading up L&D functions. Simon will share some practical experience and advice, as well as drawing on the experiences of those in the room. His aim is to make it an engaging experience with some useful takeaways.

Peter Milligan, Director of New Generation Leaders, is a business psychologist with over 25 years of international experience in developing business leaders and teams, helping them to have less stress, more joy and greater productivity. After moving from Australia to the UK in 2000, he became a director of Europe's largest executive coaching firm before establishing his own business in 2005. Peter’s clients have ranged from SMEs and family businesses to larger corporates such as Australia Post, AXA, BP, Credit Suisse, First Group, Kerry Foods, Novartis, Origin Energy, Rolls-Royce, Rydges Hotels, and Vodafone.
