DEVELOPING YOUR DIGITAL SKILLS: An Introduction to 3D Digitisation

About this event

Important: This webinar will start at 1pm on the 20th May and finish at 1.40pm

DEVELOPING YOUR DIGITAL SKILLS: An Introduction to 3D Digitisation presented by Frederick Alexander, Digital Archivist on the Historic Environment of Scotland's Rock Art Project. This presentation will introduce using 3D modelling to digitise your collections. New technologies allow us to digitise and view our collections in exciting and different ways. This presentation will focus on 3D photogrammetry, what it is, and how it can be applied to your collections. The technology can be applied to any 3D object, such as, books, trophies, ceramics etc., often found in community archive heritage collections. Frederick will demonstrate how 3D modelling has been used during Scotland’s Rock Art Project, the first major research project focusing on prehistoric rock art in Scotland.

This is the fourth of eight webinars dedicated to the digitisation of community heritage archives. All events in the series Developing Your Digital Skills can be booked through Eventbrite.

As a result of the coronavirus pandemic and current restrictions of movement, we understand that people wish to continue developing their digital skills regarding their community archive, which is why The Community Archives and Heritage Group Scotland Network and Scottish Council on Archives have created the Developing Your Digital Skills: Digitisation webinar series. Topics explored in this new webinar series are the result of a recent survey.

We will start the webinar series with an Introduction to Digitisation. This will be followed each week with a webinar dedicated to practical advice on how to digitise diverse types of archival material, such as; documents and photographs, sound and moving image and 3D objects. We will also consider GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation) and data protection, cataloguing your digital files, and the long-term care of your digital files. Once your archive collection is digitised, you can then find out more about the benefits of community engagement on a digital platform.

Join us every Thursday, starting on the 29th April, for a short lunchtime webinar on Developing Your Digital Skills. These enjoyable and informative 40-minute webinars offer practical advice to anyone working or volunteering in community archives and heritage groups. The webinars are free to attend and there will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and discuss any concerns or ideas you may have. You are welcome to attend as many as you wish by signing up for each webinar through Eventbrite. Each week the webinar will begin with a presentation from an archivist or expert speaker, followed by a Q&A session. Why should you attend? These webinars will equip you with the knowledge and skills to:

  • How to digitise your archive collections.
  • Increase visibility of your digital collections.
  • Strategically promote your digital collections and optimise your collection for discovery via Google and other search tools.
  • Increase your engagement with your local community and beyond.
