Overview

An inspiring 3-part series into finding your artistic voice. Develop skills in light, emotion and personal style with Sue Brown.

How do you move past imitating the photographers you admire and find your own visual signature?

Join double-Fellowship holder Sue Brown for a three-part series on transitioning from taking good pictures to creating work that is unmistakably yours. Drawing on over 45 years of experience, including her time chairing the RPS Visual Art Panel, Sue explores how to connect emotionally with your environment and let that feeling dictate your technical choices.

Photography is a constant learning curve: a lifelong challenge to be enjoyed through the evolution of cameras, processing, and overcoming obstacles. Sue believes it is vital to learn by mistakes and understand that our learning never stands still.

The Series Schedule

Part 1: Finding Your Style In this opening session, Sue shares an overview of her 45 year journey and addresses three vital questions regarding artistic identity: Do we need or want a style, does a style find us, and can we maintain more than one style? These answers set the foundation before moving on to more detailed discussions in the following weeks.

Part 2: Influence, Emotion, and Wellbeing We move beyond "capturing" a scene to start interpreting it through mood, atmosphere, and light. Sue examines "The Influence Trap" to show how we can learn from masters without simply copying them, using examples of photographers who influenced her own response.

She also discusses her dedicated work in "Arts for Health," exploring how photography impacts personal wellbeing and mindfulness in healthcare and everyday life. Finally, she considers the "Double" or multiple perspective: learning how to maintain a style while adapting to life’s challenges.

Part 3: Mastering Composition After exploring the gains of belonging to multidisciplinary artist groups, we dive into a deep discussion on composition. Sue defines composition as the thoughtful arrangement of subjects, lines, shapes, colours, and space to communicate a story or emotion.

She will cover principles such as the Rule of Thirds, leading lines, framing, symmetry, and negative space. By understanding these rules, you can learn to intentionally break them for more expressive results that help deliver your own personal style.

A Personal Note from Mark

I am absolutely thrilled to finally welcome Sue Brown to the presenter's chair! As many of you know, Sue has been a wonderful and supportive part of our Camversation community for years. Sue is one of those rare photographers who can explain the "why" just as well as the "how." Having achieved two Fellowships in different disciplines, she understands that style isn't about sticking to one subject; it's about how you see the world. This is the perfect way to kick off your creative year!
