Development & Climate Days 2017

Join us for Development and Climate Days 2017 - two days of informal discussion and dialogue linking climate change and development.

Development and Climate Days (D&C Days) is an annual event for people attending the Conference of the Parties (COP23) to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC). The gathering brings together practitioners, negotiators, scientists and policymakers to explore key issues, share best practice, disseminate news, literature and reports, and promote links between development and climate.

Attendance is free and open to everyone attending COP23 in Bonn.

This year's themes

The 2017 D&C Days programme (PDF) will focus on four themes:

• Resilience through empowerment and access: exploring the effective pathways to address poverty and climate vulnerability and manage climate risk, to consider how engagement in decision making, equitable access to resources, and the provision of goods, services and innovation can be enhanced (download the background paper (PDF))

• Valuing lived experience, and local knowledge: highlighting the importance of creating space and voice for those at the development and climate frontline in all discussions related to climate and development (download the background paper (PDF))

• Transparency and downward accountability: examining the ways in which decisions are made, climate responses are prioritised and climate finance is directed (download the background paper (PDF))

Shared resilience: recognising we live in an interconnected world with complex intercontinental supply chains, global financial flows, and decision making shared between the international, national and local levels, strategies for managing risk and building resilience must be designed and implemented together (download the background paper (PDF)).

Within these themes, D&C Days will be tackling big questions, seeking effective and practical answers, and working together on fair solutions. Through creative activities and interactive discussion, we will consider a series of complex questions, including:

• How can gender responsive climate action lead to resilient communities?
• How can we build resilience in fragile and conflict-affected contexts, where many of the world’s most vulnerable people live?
• How should we decipher the politics of how the UNFCCC is addressing the issues of transparency and downward accountability?
• What actions can companies take to reduce vulnerability and enhance resilience in the communities along their supply chains?

About the organisers

This year's event is organised by a partnership between the Red Cross Red Crescent Climate Centre; the International Institute for Environment and Development (IIED); the International Development Research Centre (IDRC); the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR); the Mary Robinson Foundation – Climate Justice (MRFCJ); We Mean Business (WMB); the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO); and the German Development Institute/Deutsches Institut für Entwicklungspolitik (DIE).

Contributing partners to this year’s event are Action on Climate Today, Oxford Policy Management (ACT, OPM); the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD); the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO); the Adaptation Network; the NAP Global Network; the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ); and the Women's Environment and Development Organization (WEDO).

About attending

How do I get there?

By train: the Kameha Grand Hotel is a five-minute walk from the Bonn-Oberkassel train station. Or from Bonn's main train station, take the 606 bus line towards Ramersdorf and get off directly outside the venue at stop "Konrad-Zuse-Platz" (20 minutes).

From COP23: COP23 is being held at the World Conference Centre, Bonn. The Kameha Grand Hotel can be reached within 5-8 minutes by car, or 25 minutes on public bus route 66 from stop "Gronau Heussallee/Museumsmeile" to stop "Ramersdorf".

Alternatively, the Kameha Grand Hotel is a 30-minute carbon-friendly walk over the Rhine from the World Conference Centre. Check a map of the route.

City authorities are not encouraging private transportation arrangements. Considering the usual metropolitan heavy traffic, especially during rush hours, the expected numbers of COP23 participants, and the security measures around the conference and throughout the city, cars, vans and coaches are not likely to be faster than buses, trams, metros and trains. In addition, they are less climate and environmentally friendly.

Do I need to bring a ticket to get in?

When you register you will get a confirmation email with a PDF attachment that is your ticket. Please present this ticket when you arrive. You can either print out the PDF ticket or keep the email on your mobile phone and show us the attachment when you arrive. Tickets are not transferrable.

Is there disabled access?

The Kameha Grand has disabled access to the venue in all areas. There is step-free access from the entrance to the conference rooms.

The Development & Climate Days 2017 partners are committed to promoting sustainable development. To reduce the environmental impact of this event we are strongly encouraging participants to avoid distribution of printed publications and increase electronic distribution where appropriate.

The event will be delivered in collaboration with suppliers and contractors that also carefully consider their own carbon footprint and endeavour to reduce their environmental impact.
