Event description

Description

Dartmouth has a fascinating and rich history due to its excellent deep water harbour. It developed as a significant trading port and shipbuilding centre in the Middle Ages and flourished in the 16thC and 17thC. Several buildings from that time exist today. The town contributed ships to fight the Armada in 1588; explorers left from the Dart for the “New World”; the Pilgrim Fathers called in for repairs in 1620. In the English Civil War, the town changed hands twice; later, the town’s merchants dominated the Newfoundland trade. Since 1863, Dartmouth has been the location of the training of Royal Naval Officers and in the Second World War, was home to Free French forces, Royal Marine Commandos, and US Naval and Amphibious forces in the build-up to D-Day.
