Devon Social Value Conversation

By Devon Community Foundation

Overview

An open invitation to come and discuss ‘Social Value’ and how it is understood and measured.

An invitation to come and discuss ‘Social Value’ – how it is understood and measured, and the role it plays in structuring commissioning relationships between funders and public sector and VCSE organisations. It is a hot topic currently but what does ‘social value’ mean? Does it mean different things to different people?

The Devon Social Value Summit aims to bring together VCSE and public sector people to debate and critique prevailing narratives around these issues. The event will facilitate a detailed examination of measurement mechanisms, and the implications of measuring one thing rather than another, as well as an examination of the practical realities of commissioning and service delivery in the current climate. The Summit will also provide an opportunity to consider alternatives to SROI, and to learn about other techniques and approaches. We’ll do this through panel discussions, presentations and practical workshops.

Alongside this there are increasingly urgent critical questions that challenge the robustness of some measures, and some are concerned about the narrowing of perspective they can entail. There is a need for a wider conversation about the full range of ways in which we can understand, measure and evaluate the social value derived from services and interventions, whether they are delivered by VCSE organisations or statutory bodies.

The Summit is coordinated by the Torbay, Plymouth and Devon VCSE Assembly’s Research Community of Practice, supported by NHS England through the Research Engagement Network. Anyone working or volunteering in the public, community, charity or social enterprise sector is welcome to attend.
