This full-day course provides an overview of Parliament’s work, role, powers and processes: What is Parliament? What are its powers? What happens there? How does this affect civil servants?

It has been designed for colleagues that are in roles specific to the EU Exit, and/or are new to policy. It is suitable for those with little to no experience of Parliament.

The course is delivered through a mixture of presentation, discussion and interactive exercises.

The course covers topics including:

How Parliament is made up
The work of MPs and the House of Commons
The work of Peers and the House of Lords
The relationship between Parliament and government
Scrutiny processes such as debates, questions, statements and committees
An introduction to legislation

As a result of this course you will understand:

The UK Parliament’s work, role and processes
How Parliament holds your department to account, including the responsibilities of Ministers to Parliament
Why Parliament is important to your role
