The past, present and future of diabetes inpatient nursing will be discussed during a webinar in November to mark World Diabetes Day.

Diabetes inpatient nursing: the past, present and future is an online session being hosted by the DISN UK Group to explore how the face of this sector has changed over the last 30 years, and how it will alter in the years to come.

Taking place ahead of World Diabetes Day on Thursday, November 9, at 7pm, the webinar will be led by Professor Gerry Rayman, Phillip Newland Jones and some members of the DISN UK Group committee.

Professor Rayman, Consultant in Diabetes at Ipswich Hospital and the Joint Diabetes Clinical Lead for Getting It Right First Time (GIRFT), will present on the changing landscape of inpatient diabetes care over the last few decades.

He will be reflecting on the advances that collaborations and national initiatives such as the National Diabetes Inpatient Audit, the Joint British Diabetes Societies, GIRFT and the Diabetes Care Accreditation Programme have brought.

In addition, Professor Rayman will be discussing how the role of diabetes inpatient specialist nurses has been instrumental in helping achieve change.

Meanwhile, Phillip will be leading the discussions on the current care available for people with diabetes in hospital.

Phillip is a Consultant Pharmacist in Diabetes and Endocrinology and is the Clinical Director of the Diabetes and Endocrine service at University Hospitals Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.

Members of the DISN committee will close the webinar with a session on the future of diabetes inpatient care.

They will discuss how COVID-19 will influence the future of diabetes inpatient care and how hospital teams will manage GLP-1 shortages.

During the webinar, they will also address ways hospital teams can manage future insulin shortages and how diabetes inpatient teams should function.
