About this event
Join the research circle on ‘Building community, democracy and dialogue’. Series on 'Dialogue for Democracy: Cultures and Ecologies in Crisis' and our June event on ecological climate emergency, environmental action and lifelong learning and education.
Part of a series of events organised by the Centenary Commission on Adult Education and University of Nottingham.
Join the research circle to ask why lifelong learning needs to be radically re-shaped.
Three short contributions from
• Professor Steve Martin, University of Nottingham
• Mel Lenehan, Principal and CEO, Fircroft College, Birmingham
• Ross Weddle, Chair, WEA Green Branch.
Followed by opportunities to join discussion groups and plan action.
Debate and plan possibilities for adult lifelong education, tackling ecological climate emergency and taking environmental action
On 10 June, in a combination of short presentations
• Professor Steve Martin will ask how the existential crisis of Climate Change relates to local action as exemplified by Transition Groups and currently Community Energy Groups.
• Mel Lenehan will highlight the significance of a curriculum for sustainability with adult learners at Fircroft College, an adult residential college in Birmingham.
• Ross Weddle will review ‘levelling’ and ask how, and if, genuine ‘levelling up’ could create a more balanced society- and implications for the environment.
In discussion groups, on 10 June, we then want to
• Ask why - and how- does adult lifelong education need to be radically reshaped?
• Listen to your reflections on how the three presentations relate to the crisis faced by lifelong learning and the possibilities for further collective action through lifelong education.
