About this event

St Anne's alumna and retired GP, Di Ackerley Downie and Dr Adrian de Soto, a metabolic physician who is currently studying for a DPhil at St Anne's will talk about how diet (and fasting) impact on chronic diseases like obesity, diabetes and heart disease.

Dr de Soto, a metabolic physician from Mexico, is at St Anne’s researching for his DPhil. He was the recipient of our Domus fund donation in 2018. Dr de Soto will talk about his research which is on Ketosis, which is a natural state induced by fasting which might be therapeutic for various chronic diseases, including diabetes and heart disease.

Dr Diane Ackerley was a GP, and matriculated in 1975, when ideas about diet and disease were very different. Fibre was king – lack of it was thought to underlie the epidemic of western diseases. Di’s talk will look at the ‘microbiome’ – the bacteria that live in our guts and seem to have important effects on our health. Is this just the latest fad? Is fibre still the answer? What is the evidence? What should we eat?
