About this event

Join us at Tullie House Museum & Art Gallery, Carlisle, for a two-day celebration of research, discovery, and community archaeology.

The Uncovering Roman Carlisle (URC) Conference 2025 brings together leading archaeologists, finds specialists, and community voices to share the latest insights into Roman frontiers, Carlisle’s unique role, and the power of public archaeology.

This hybrid event will also be streamed online, ensuring accessibility for all.

Across the weekend you’ll enjoy:
- Research updates from nationally and internationally recognised experts
- Newly published finds from Carlisle and beyond
- Specialist case studies on pottery, glass, beads, and stamped tiles
- Keynotes reflecting on 50 years of frontier archaeology
- Workshops on fieldwork skills, community involvement, and exhibition planning
- Networking opportunities with researchers, heritage professionals, and volunteers

(Please note the agenda as always with a live event, may be subject to change, or slight alteration!)

Who Should Attend?

  • Archaeologists and heritage professionals
  • Students and researchers of Roman Britain
  • Volunteers and community archaeology enthusiasts
  • Anyone curious about Carlisle’s Roman past and its wider frontier story

Alongside the talks and workshops, there will be an Information Marketplace, with stalls from partner organisations sharing resources, opportunities, and publications. Attendees will also be able to browse and purchase Uncovering Roman Carlisle merchandise to take a piece of the project home.

A limited number of concessionary places are available - please contact us for the discount code you can apply at checkout, at uncoveringromancarlisle@gmail.com.

At the end of the conference, we’ll be holding a short workshop session. This is entirely optional — you are very welcome to join us, but there’s no expectation to do so. The session will focus on planning for the future of Uncovering Roman Carlisle, and we’d love to hear your thoughts on what you’d like to see from us going forward. Your ideas will feed into wider information-gathering exercises we’ll be running in the coming months. We’ll also share details of an exciting opportunity to contribute to our upcoming exhibition at Tullie.
