 Digital Communication Strategies Showcase and Free Surgery  

May 7, 2014 

Bournemouth House - BG11 and Wollstone Lecture Theatre 

Parking on-site is for permit holder only, please use local pay and display car parks 


This event aims to celebrate the collaboration between university students, digital media specialists, SMEs, third sector and start-ups in the South.  


There are three parts to the event, open to everyone:  

  • The DCS Showcase held in the morning will feature second year students from the Media School at Bournemouth University pitching their social media projects to a panel of industry judges from LV=, RNLI and Adido.
  • The DCS Surgery held in the afternoon invites SMEs, third sector and start-ups in the South to a working lunch, networking and information session focused on addressing their social media challenges. Students, the members of the judging panel from the morning showcase and academic experts from The Media School will be there to provide advice and answer questions about digital media strategy.
  • Guest talks from Matt Desmier from Silicon South and Dr Dan Jackson from The Media School, BU

Judges’ bios



Nikki Maidment - Head of Digital Marketing - Adido


Nikki is a digital dinosaur with over 15 years’ experience working in the industry. Starting her career at a top agency in London she has seen the rise of the media giants like Google and Facebook, and been part of the digital revolution since its inception in the late 1990’s.


Nikki is an expert in all digital marketing activities and uses her skills to develop results driven and realistic digital marketing strategies for clients across a range of sectors and budgets. Focused on the delivering a “best on the web” concept in everything, she inspires clients to be customer focused to deliver success online.


Outside of work, Nikki loves making the most of the Bournemouth area enjoying horse riding, sailing and the beach. Her young son keeps her very busy but she manages to juggle the work life balance well.




Daniel Connolly - Digital Content Manager - LV=


Daniel manages a team responsible for developing and maintaining a suite of websites and applications for LV=. This is a varied role that facilitates the translation of business requirements into online customer journeys that empower visitors to evaluate our product ranges and make an informed decision whether to purchase. During his 10 years career, Daniel has also worked for or alongside some of the countries most recognisable brands such as Sainsbury's, Reed Elsevier, Citi Bank, Legal & General and Nationwide.


Luke Williams – Social Media Innovation Officer – RNLI

Luke (@alukeonlife) works as Social Media Innovation Officer at the RNLI, supporting the organisation’s use of social media through training, working on integrated digital campaigns and producing analytics based reports, as well as being a member of the innovations cell.


Before joining the RNLI in 2012, Luke built and sold a social media consultancy and training business called SocialTech that worked with organisations including: Condé Nast (Vogue, GQ etc.), Channel 4, KPMG and E.ON, he's also spoken at a number of events including TEDxHull & TEDxBristol, LiveTech and the Office show.





Emily Pykett – Social Media Manager - RNLI


Emily Pykett is a former print journalist who broke world exclusives sitting in the foreign editor’s chair and implemented live blogging at The Scotsman for 24/7 digital coverage of Barack Obama’s first election. Making the jump into public sector PR in 2009, she persuaded a local authority to commission its first video release and to use first use of social media to promote council events. She was headhunted by a PR agency and became their social media executive before setting up her own consultancy, Socially Dorset. She now works as social media manager for the RNLI.



Speakers’ bios


Matt Desmier – Founder, ThinkCreateDo

Matt (@mattdesmier) trained as a designer, has worked as a design manager and an innovation advisor, and ran one of the South Coast's leading creative economy business incubators.  He's one of the main proponents of the popular digital network Meetdraw and is the founder of the highly successful annual digital innovation conference Silicon Beach.  Recently he launched ThinkCreateDo, an online resource designed to support and grow the digital economy across the South Coast.  He knows tonnes of people and is trusted by most of them.


Dr Dan Jackson - Head of Knowledge Exchange, CMC – The Media School, Bournemouth University


Dan is a Senior Lecturer in Media and Communications and has published widely in the fields of journalism, media, political communications and political engagement. He has led a number of bespoke research projects for commercial clients utilising both quantitative and qualitative research methods. His consultancy experience also includes providing strategic communications and marketing advice to businesses.
