Event description

Description

If you are an artist, craftsperson or creative business you probably already have a social media presence. But are you using social media effectively to attract customers? Are you making the best use of your precious time? How do different creative products lend themselves to different strategies?

This free workshop is aimed at those businesses who are already on social media (Twitter, Facebook, Instagram etc.) but who want to improve what they currently do. The emphasis will be on reflection: helping you to work with like-minded creatives to think about what you already do well, and to recognise what you could do better. By the end of the day, you'll have developed a clear strategy of what you need to do next.

Building on this, you have the option of following this workshop with up to six hours of more individualised support to help put your plans into action. This could include recording a promotional video, devising a social media campaign, or reviewing your website.

Outline programme

  • Morning: Exploring what you and other creatives currently do on social media; how to find the key influencers in your field; how to use social media to engage with others

  • Afternoon: How to find your audience and evaluate what you are achieving

  • Takeaway: Deciding strategies for future development

Lunch and refreshments will be provided.

Please bring your own device (laptop, tablet etc.) to the workshop. Free WIFI will be provided.

After the workshop, you will have the opportunity to receive up to six hours of more individualised support to put into practice some of the things you have learned. You will be working with a mentor and perhaps one or two other businesses with similar requirements to develop new content. Arrangements for this bespoke support will be made following the workshop.

Who will lead this workshop?

The workshop will be led by Creative Fuse North East researchers, Dr Mariann Hardey and Dr Alistair Brown.

Mariann is a social scientist and digital humanities scholar. One of the first to occupy Facebook, before there were friends, and to tweet on Twitter before there were Followers, Mariann is made up in unequal parts with a sociologist's mind, a literary heart, and the unfolding soul of an intrepid adventurer across the borders of digital content. Reach her on Twitter at @thatdrmaz.

Alistair is an experienced website and social media developer (most recently as editor of the award-winning Research English At Durham). He has researched the use of social media in the cultural sector in the North East. He can be found on Twitter as @alibrown18.
