Participatory public engagement in digital health and care: moving beyond conventional engagement methods

Sonja and colleagues were commissioned to undertake a rapid knowledge synthesis of participatory public engagement methods, to explore and inform innovative participatory approaches that can be used by the Scottish Government to move beyond conventional engagement methods in digital health and care. They used this synthesis to bring together existing knowledge on participatory public engagement methods in a usable way that can help decision-makers to plan and design participatory public engagement activities around digital health and care, and identify and involve the most appropriate publics. In this presentation, Sonja will discuss the findings and outline 5 families of participatory public engagement methods identified through their study.

Moving beyond the “too hard” box

In November 2020 the Digital Delivery Citizen Board, part of the Scottish Government's Digital Health and Care Directorate, approved the establishment of a Task and Finish Group to explore approaches to citizen engagement. The purpose of the group was to scope out where and how to focus efforts to optimise citizen engagement relating to the development and delivery of digital health and care. This presentation describes the work of the group, the challenges and opportunities it found, the recommendations it made, and early progress and planning to deliver on next steps.

Meaningful citizen engagement can be challenging when designing a single service. When it relates to a complex landscape that encompasses strategy, policy and services delivered by a range of partners, this is intensified. We are at the beginning of our journey, but there is a real desire to move out of the "too hard" box.

Digital inclusion

During the COVID-19 pandemic, it was more important than ever to find a way to digitally connect with the people we support. To complement our welfare calls and emergency respite, we took advantage of our existing Facebook pages and WhatsApp groups to run virtual groups. This presentation shows how Renfrewshire Health and Social Care Partnership overcame barriers to help the people it supports engage with digital technology via the use of digital groups. Through support from the Connecting Scotland fund, staff worked together with supported people and parents and carers to help them access the groups.
