About this event

This invitation is to third sector organisations.

We encourage organisations to register one service user/ member of their community to join them at this event.

How people in Scotland access urgent care is changing.

To ensure the successful delivery of the Redesign Urgent Care programme, the Scottish Government is working with citizens and key stakeholders as equal partners, to consult, engage and co-design the new single point of access for urgent care and ensure there is buy-in from the public, clinicians and other stakeholders.

Changes to the Design of Urgent care aim to result in less people waiting in Emergency Departments minimising the risk of infection, providing better patient outcomes and care closer to home.

Attendances at Accident and Emergency Departments (A&E) have increased over the past 3 years. Research suggests that approximately 20% of patients who self-present at A&Es could be helped in a way that is more appropriate to their needs.

The need for new ways of delivering services during COVID-19 has demonstrated what can be achieved to keep people safe and that there are a range of alternative services to face to face care.

Forthcoming Changes

Access to urgent care will soon be available through a national single point of access through NHS 24 / 111, available 24/7.

Where a further medical assessment is required, NHS 24 will refer citizens to the most appropriate health professional. This may involve a telephone or video call in the first instance.

If the health professional thinks a person will need A&E, they may arrange for them to arrive at a certain time, to reduce crowding in waiting areas.

If they don’t think the citizen needs A&E they will help them get the care they need as quickly, safely, and as close to home as possible. In an emergency or life threatening situation the citizen should still go directly to A&E or call 999.

We would like to invite you to this event to:

  1. Share with you how this new system will work and the plans for roll out across Scotland
  2. Explore what the consequences of these changes might mean for different people and what could be done to mitigate the widening of inequalities.

Input from these workshops will inform recommendations for improvements to the new model as well as recommendations for areas for further research.

The event will be hosted via Webex. There is no requirement to download any software as you can access Webex via internet browser.

The facilitation team will send out a link via email to enable entry to the event. This email will will also include a link to attend the session by telephone if preferred.
