Event Details

Date: Friday 27 March 2020

Instructor: Paul Orsi

Location:  Cumbria Woodlands, LDNPA Building, Murley Moss, Kendal, Cumbria LA9 7RL

myForest is a free to use online web tool designed to help woodland owners and managers produce management plans.  The system allows users to map their woodlands, add information (including inventory and work programme) and produce management plans using Forestry Commission England’s template.

The course will take participants through the whole management planning process, from a woodland survey through to producing management plans that can be approved by a Forestry Commission Woodland Officer. Participants will learn how to create a myForest account, map a woodland area, add attribute data and generate a management plan and associated maps. We will look at what is required from a good management plan and how myForest can help you with this.

This course is aimed at owners of small woodlands who are keen to learn how to create their own management plan.

Duration: 9.30am to 4.30pm

Price: £85.00 for RFS members / £100.00 for non RFS members

Note: Course attendees are advised to bring a packed lunch as lunch is not provided.  Tea, coffee, water and biscuits will be provided on arrival and at suitable breaks in the classroom sessions.

About the tutor:

Paul Orsi is Director of Operations at the Sylva Foundation.  He has a Masters in Land Management and is a Chartered Surveyor and Chartered Forester.  He has 20 years of experience in the forestry and land management sectors working in the private sector for both companies and estates, and more recently in working for an NGO.  Paul’s work for Sylva sees him lead on the development of myForest as well as Sylva’s other Forestry and Rural Enterprise activities.

About Cumbria Woodlands:

Cumbria Woodlands are kindly providing the training facilities for this course.  They are a not-for-profit organisation launched in 1991 in response to widespread concern over the neglected state of the County’s woodlands. The project brief was originally for five years, but the organisation has moved forward with the constantly changing funding environment. Current support comes from Cumbria County Council, Defra, the European Agricultural Fund for Rural Areas, the Forestry Commission, Natural England, and the Woodland Trust.  Their aim is for woodlands to be managed and improved in order for them to thrive and to be economically and ecologically sustainable so we can get the most from them.  For more information visit their website -
