The ERDF R&I Health Accelerator project is delivering a two-part digital health series on IP for Digital Health Technologies.

This Digital Health Series is targeted at the multi-disciplinary Digital Health sector including clinicians, researchers, and scientists with a wide range of expertise in healthcare, engineering, social sciences, public health, health economics and data management.

In the initial webinar, Venner Shipley’s Patent Attorneys Gary Whiting and Peter Thorniley will cover how IP rights can be put to work to reward and commercialise your innovation. We will also look at the broader IP strategy during digital health product development, from conception and initial research to advertising, marketing and sales as well as future developments.

We will cover the various intellectual property (IP) rights that can be used to protect a digital health product and then provide general tips and tricks using example case studies covering both hardware and software solutions and services. Examples include telemedicine, health apps, wearable devices, and virtual reality, as well as data driven approaches revolutionising research and R&D in molecular biology/biochemistry wet lab-driven projects in the life sciences sector. We will pay particular, but not exclusive, attention to how developments in artificial intelligence should be seen and understood in this context.

PART 2 : 30 November 2021 (4:30-6:00PM TBC)

In part 2 of the series, the example case studies from the webinar will form the basis for a broader discussion of commercialisation strategies to be held in person at a networking event on 30 November. In this follow-up event, we will also look at other IP considerations, such as protection as a trade secret, the use of open-source software, potential ownership disputes with employees and contractors and IP licences.

The Research and Innovation (R&I) Health Accelerator is an ERDF (European Regional Development Fund) part-funded project delivered by Health Innovation Manchester, The University of Manchester, The University of Manchester Innovation Factory, Manchester City Council and Bionow.
