Event Details

Come and find out how awarding winning artist company Blast Theory have created a way for your visitors to pick any object in your museum and give it to someone they love.

As part of the Museums Association Annual Conference (2019) fringe, this is the perfect chance to network before the conference and explore Brighton Museum & Art Gallery.

Are you looking for a piece of low-cost digital innovation for your museum? Are you struggling with how best to offer something that is fun, participatory and meaningful to your visitor? Do you lack in house skills and confidence and are interested in what is out there that you could use without having to build it? Then try out Gift, a new web app developed by Blast TheoryWatch this brilliant video that fully explains the Gift app experience.

Described as a way of enabling your visitors to create and share a ‘playlist’ of their visit, Gift is a piece of open-source software that can be used and adapted by any museum free of charge. You don’t need to have digitised your collection for the GIFT web app to work for your museum as visitors use their own smartphones to take pictures and create a digital gift for someone they love. It’s like making a playlist or a mixtape for someone except with photos of objects from your museum - a personal gift which will speak directly to the person they send it to.

At this free event, you’ll have a chance to hear about its development from one of the artists who created it and learn more about how this app might be used by your museum. You can then test out the Gift app on your own smartphone in the galleries of Brighton Museum.

Speakers will include:

We’ll also be offering you a chance to learn more about the Horizon 2020 funded project that supported the development of this project as well as other free that museums can use to develop new digital experiences and engagement ideas.

This event is free to attend but booking is essential as spaces are limited to 30 places at each session. Sessions repeat at 3pm and 4pm. The museum will be open until 6pm for you to test out the app. Refreshments will be available.

This project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 research and innovation programme under grant agreement No 727040.

Culture24 is an independent charity which supports the cultural sector to reach and connect with audiences.  We are a small and dynamic team of writers, thinkers, producers and publishers who love arts and culture, understand digital and believe that cultural organisations have a vital place in a better world.

We are best known for publishing great websites about culture; producing the new Emerge Festival of Museum Lates in London, and leading Let’s Get Real, the collaborative action research project involving cultural organisations across the UK and Europe. We also aggregate and share data about thousands of cultural events exhibitions and venues with a range of partners including the BBC.

Culture24 provides platforms, networks and safe, collaborative spaces within which cultural organisations can work together to reach and engage audiences, benchmark, experiment and learn. We broker partnerships and strategic opportunities that it would be near impossible to access as individual organisations.
