Professor Hussein Suleman (University of Cape Town, South Africa) will present “Digital Libraries and Development”.
Digital libraries have arguably brought a degree of formalism to Web-based digital collections in all disciplines. However, this success is limited in countries with resource constraints, such as most of Africa, in spite of a desperate need for developmental initiatives. The earliest attempts to address this resulted in dumbed-down solutions using unusual and archaic technology. More recently, we have experimented with the latest technical standards, derivations of design principles and a re-design of established repository architectures to create solutions that work well with limited resources. These alternative solutions are ultimately intended to be general solutions that may be applied anywhere in the world.
