Event description
Join us in the National Library of Ireland for an event exploring the need for preservation of digital photography in the 21st century.

About this Event

The fragility and danger of loss of digital photography is very immediate compared to the world of the tangible physical photograph. Unless we intervene proactively to encourage and raise awareness of the need for preservation of digital content in any form including photographs, we will face its loss. This will in turn affect our ability to tell the story of Ireland, not just in 100 years but in 10.

Photographers, creative industries, media, cultural heritage and arts organisations, local communities and the public have an inbuilt dependency on continued access to digital photography. This event provides the opportunity to gain insight to the roles of different groups involved in the life of a photograph and build awareness of how we can ensure its longer term preservation.

Keynote speaker Matthew Burgess is Digital Collections Analyst at the State Library of New South Wales, Australia. Matthew will talk about his work in digital preservation and how his career path has led him from photography, to digitisation and currently to digital preservation. The event will also include lightning talks highlighting the different roles played by those involved in the life of the photograph including photographers (creators), curators, arts officers, photo historians and preservers, and will finish with a discussion on the need for preservation of 21st century photography, and any collaborative next steps that could be taken to achieve this.
