Event description

Description

Are you fascinated by history? Curious about the relationship between food and the past?

Do you wish you could go back in time and eat the food that your ancestors used to eat? Or even better eat in an historic location?

Join us and become a piece of history. Experience recipes from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Expect authentic historical food outrageously displayed.

The kitchen becomes the venue. You will be eating in the Town House’s recently restored basement kitchen. You'll meet our visiting guest cook Mr Couchman, the Regency Town House's own cook Mrs Simpson & the wonderfuly severe housekeeper Mrs Ainsley. We might have even taken on a new chambermaid too.

Tasting notes

Negus

This beverage of wine or port, hot water, lemon juice, sugar, and nutmeg was created by Colonel Francis Negus, a British courtier, in the early 18th century. The drink remained a popular fortifier on cold evenings throughout the 18th and 19th centuries.

Flummery

Flummery is a starch-based, sweet, soft dessert pudding known to have been popular in Britain and Ireland from the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries.

New cooking techniques, often French, and ingredients allowed cooks to refine this pudding to become a staple sweet dish on the table, often presented in elaborate ways, and with considerably better tastes and textures than the oatmeal original.

Price £35 (plus a small booking fee) includes three courses, Regency punch and a glass of claret.

Just 24 places. Book early to avoid disappointment.

All profits raised will go to the continuing restoration of our wonderful building.

Comments on the last Dine Like A Servant:

"I cannot praise tonight highly enough. It was absolutely fantastic. We had an amazing time. Simply glorious food and met some fabulous people too. In fact we decided we should say it was all terrible as we really don't want to make it more popular and find we can't get tickets for future events!! Well done Paul and your marvellous team. The food was sensational. You all worked extremely hard. Looking forward to the next event with great anticipation!! X

"We attended “Dine as a Servant” last night and had a fantastic time - the house is beautiful and the volunteer team amazing ! The food was excellent- we will be supporting this project as much as we can (especially if there is food !)"
