About the course

Our pupils may know about capital letters and full stops, but do they put this knowledge into practice? The teaching approach with the best record of closing the knowing-doing gap is Direct Instruction. Many Inspiration Trust schools have therefore begun to use the highly effective Direct Instruction programme Expressive Writing to teach punctuation and grammar to mastery. Expressive Writing is a commercially available, scripted programme that lays the foundations for good writing. With its easy-to-use, incremental approach, Expressive Writing is a great way to help writers improve their skills.

The programme contains:
- Pictures and picture sequences that form the basis of student writing and guide teacher instruction.
- Instructional strands that include mechanics, sentence writing, paragraph and story writing, and editing.
- In-depth support in every lesson for teaching multiple skills.

The programme can be used with learners from KS2 all the way up to adult and aligns well with the primary punctuation and grammar curriculum.

This CPD course covers all the information you need to launch Expressive Writing in your primary or secondary school and teach it with confidence.

Who should attend?

Primary or secondary teachers or heads of department interested in investigating the programme or looking for training on how to deliver it.

The tutors

Dr Anthony Radice read literature at Manchester University, achieving first class honours, before going on to study for a master’s degree at Leeds, followed by a doctoral thesis on American poetry. While completing his thesis, he trained as a teacher through the forerunner to SCITT, the Graduate Teacher Programme. He has worked in a wide range of schools, both state and independent. As head of English at an independent school in London, he pioneered a rigorous, chronological approach to teaching English. Through his blog, ‘The Traditional Teacher’, he has made a strong case for the emancipatory power of a coherent, knowledge-rich curriculum delivered through high-quality didactic teaching. He firmly believes that it is through these means that all pupils, of every background, can achieve success.
