Disability and Democracy, Local and National hustings and discussion event
Fri 28 April 2017, 11:00 – 16:00 BST
We organised this event originally to be a local election focussed hustings and discussion workshop, with a screening of I Daniel Blake at the end. The decision to hold a snap General Election has caused us to change those plans! We are keen to proceed with a local election focus as we dont wish to allow the snap-election to overshadow the Council Elections next month, given the importance of Council decision making to disabled people.
However, both Elections are set against a background of austerity and will have a huge impact on OUR lives, so it is vital that OUR voices are heard, and we are taking this opportunity to include a national politics discussion element. This event will bring disabled people into the heart of political debate through talking directly to candidates about the issues that are crucial to us and the ways in which our political participation can be maximised to shape a more inclusive Scotland.
Therefore the event plan now consists of:
A table discussion session focussing on local government issues, led by disabled people's voices but including political party reps in the discussion.
A traditional hustings "question time" style event where party reps will answer your Local Council election questions
A further table discussion session focussed on national issues relevant to the Westminster UK snap election, followed by brief speeches in response to your questions and thoughts from the parties.
Lunch will be provided.
This event is free but please register as spaces are limited and we expect it to be fully booked.
