About this event

Hey there! Are you someone who wants to learn more about disability politics and disabled people, but don’t know where to start? Do you want some ideas about how to do access good that can apply to your actual work, artistic practice and/or life? WELL! We have just the thing for you.
Come join us for our session on disability awareness!
We will cover things like:
- What even is disability? (models of disability)
- Principles of disability justice as laid out by queer crip powerhouses Patty Berne, Mia Mingus, and Stacey Milbern.
- Good practice around language, including what not to say.
- What is access? Different styles and types of access.
- How to provide access: building solutions, human solutions, tech solutions and beyond.
We may even have some time to offer practical exercises for you to begin to identify barriers to access. And of course, we will have plenty of space for questions.
The session will be relaxed and on Zoom. It will be led by experienced trainer, published academic, performer, British Podcast of the Year award winner and actual blind quip Amelia Lander-Cavallo (Tito Bone), co-facilitated by Al Lander-Cavallo.
This s is a fundraiser for Quiplash, and has tiered tickets depending on your income level. If you don't have funds to spare but still want to come, drop us an email at hello@quiplash.co.uk.
Who it's for
🏳️🌈 This is a session for people in the LGBTQQIA+ community and allies who are interested in making their work more accessible.
A note for disabled people - this is an intro session for people who are newer to disability activism and politics. If this is you, come along! If this is not you, but you would like a review of this info, come along! If you know all this stuff and want to vibe, come along! Just know we won't be able to get too in depth in this session.
Amelia's pronouns are they/them. We expect all attendees to respect each others pronouns, identities and lived experiences. We reserve the right to remove, without a warning or a refund, anyone we deem to be behaving intentionally disrespectfully towards the facilitator or other attendees.
🤑 🥰 If you are an ally and/or non-disabled please purchase an individual, ally/supporter or custom donation ticket so we can provide services at low cost to the queer disabled community. Thank you.
🎥 This session will be recorded for our internal records and use. Footage that may include participants will not be used publicly.
⚠️ There are a limited number of low income tickets available, and they will be released in stages.
⚠️ This session is not appropriate for big budget organisations and industries such as film and TV - please reach out to Quiplash directly at hello@quiplash.co.uk if you'd like to work with us.
⚠️ This session doesn't replace bespoke professional training and consulting, please reach out to Quiplash directly at hello@quiplash.co.uk if you'd like to work with us.
Access
We will run this session as relaxed - or as relaxed as zoom allows. Keep your cameras off if you want, bring your favourite stim toy, grab a snack and hang out! You won't be called upon or required to participate or talk if you don't want to.
W e will use auto-captions that are very use to Amelia's trans-atlantic American accent and will clarify if captions make up any interesting new words or phrases.
Audio description will be embedded into the session which, to be honest, is mostly going to be Amelia talking anyway.
Banner description
Bold white text on a background of blue, pink and yellow says "disability awareness". Smaller black text says "with Amelia Lander-Cavallo/Tito Bone". The words are surrounded by many emojis including pink hearts, disco balls, streamers and raised fists. There is also a party emoji face happily shouting into a megaphone and wearing a green stripped party hat . The whole thing gives some pansexual-esque party vibes, courtesy of our graphic designer Al Lander-Cavallo.
