Title: Planning For and Implementing Anti-Ableism: A Practical Guide

Introduction

Whether you work front of house or behind the scenes; are new to the sector or are a senior leader, everyone has a role to play in making theatre inclusive for all. This course will help you be the change.

Build your confidence and knowledge in discussing and implementing disability equality within your organisation. You will have plenty of opportunities to ask questions to ensure that the sessions are relevant to your area of work. Return energised and inspired, with practical ideas you can implement.

This course will provide you with a solid foundation on which to base your planning and policy-making around disability equality in your organisation. After the first session, you will have time to test out your learning in your day to day work and to return to session 2 with questions as well as with insights to share with others on the course.

Course Overview

The course covers the following areas:

• The case for disability equality at your theatre

• Basic facts and figures and an introduction to your duties under the Equality Act (2010)

• An exploration of tools and resources, including case studies and appropriate terminology

• Discussion of the ‘way we do things’, examining those things we take for granted in our organisations that may be working against our equality aspirations

Suitable For

This course is suitable for anyone working in theatre; disability equality is not just a front of house responsibility, but must permeate your organisation if there is to be real impact

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course you will:

• Be able to demonstrate an understanding of the Social Model of disability and its implications for the way theatres work

• Be able to critique the cultural assumptions of your organisation in order to minimise the impact of unconscious bias in your organisation

• Be able to describe your main duties under the Equality Act (2010)

• Have the beginnings of an action plan for embedding disability equality in your theatre

• Have ideas for where to go for further information

About the Trainer

Michèle Taylor is Director for Change at Ramps on the Moon, the organisation seeking to increase the number and visibility of D/deaf and disabled people in the cultural sector. She has been delivering training in disability issues for over thirty years and has a background as a theatre practitioner. She is committed to ensuring that disabled people’s stories are told in our theatres.

Michèle’s training sessions are interactive and dynamic, with space to bring doubts, anxieties and concerns as well as strategies, ideas and enthusiasm.

Michèle has been awarded an MBE for services to theatre and disabled people.

• BSL interpreters can be provided upon request, please note we request as much notice as possible to book this for you.

You can cancel up until 10 working days prior to the course, and receive a full refund (not including Eventbrite Fees, which are non-refundable).
