In recent years, “disaggregation” appeared as a buzz word commonly seen in both compute and network, pushed by the Hyperscales. While it suggests promising merits from a technological point of view, it is pointed out that the disaggregation of optical transport layer has been introduced only to reduce the cost of DCI transport which has relatively simple configurations of point-to-point WDM links and ROADM networks. In this regard, its more general and thorough definitions have yet to be addressed with technical validations for wider applications, considering the trend that compute and network are to converge in the era of 5G/IoT-big data.

Consisting of eight invited talks by experts followed by a panel discussion, we will explore the potential value of more general and systematic disaggregation of optical layer, which calls for automation, fully usable by upper layers for better efficiency and versatility.

This workshop will be held pre-ECOC (European Conference on Optical Communication) and is therefore a great opportunity for discussion and debate in the run-up to the conf.
