In a survey of YHFed members undertaken in the summer of 2016, three quarters of the 64 people who responded said that they would definitely or possibly attend a training session on Disaster Management.  This course has been assembled to respond to that declared need. 

Who is this course for?
This course is aimed at Museum, Art Gallery and Heritage staff or volunteers who are responsible for preparing their museums and art galleries for potential disasters. 

What will it cover?
A series of distinguished and experienced speakers will talk about their experience of dealing with recent disasters outlining: 
-what preparation they had made for such an event

 -what were the issues they faced when it happened

 -how they dealt with those issues

 -what have they learnt from the experience and how would they avoid it happening again

 -what advice they would have for others

Who will be running it?
Leeds and Museums and Art Galleries
are generously hosting the event and will use the flooding of Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills as a case study.   The museum is still closed and you will have an opportunity to see the damage caused and the work in progress 

  • Sarah Barton, Keeper and responsible for Projects and Management at Leeds Industrial Mills (Armley and Thwaite Mills) will talk about the flooding of the Armley and Thwaite Mills museums at Christmas 2015. 

  • Emma Dadson is Business Development Manager for Harwell Restoration, the leading service provider of specialist salvage for the heritage sector the UK and Ireland.  In 2012 Emma completed her book Emergency Planning and Response for Libraries, Archives and Museums (Facet Publishing). She is a regular invited speaker to events for the heritage sector in the UK and Ireland. Emma will describe her work on restoring the Glasgow School of Art after the disastrous fire of May 2014.

  • Ian Panter, is Head of Conservation for the York Archaeological Trust, operating a commercial archaeological conservation facility with clients from across the UK and overseas. Other responsibilities include the conservation of our own collections including the artefacts displayed in the Jorvik Viking Centre and our other museums. Ian will talk about the flooding of Jorvik at Christmas 2015. 
  • Sharon Connell, Conservation Officer at Leeds University Library.  She is also Chair of the Rapid Response Network (RRN), a membership organization which works together to improve emergency planning and preparedness, for the benefit of public access collections and heritage in the Yorkshire and Humber. Sharon will represent the RRN and talk about the resources and support they can provide.  

How much will it cost?
The course is priced at a modest £35 for Fed members and £45 for non-fed members.  Coffee and tea will be provided and lunch is available to purchase in outlets around the area.  There will also be 3 free places for volunteers from Fed members, available on a first come first served basis and 3 more for RRN members. 

Where is it?
It will be located at the Leeds Industrial Museum at Armley Mills, Canal Road, Armley, LS12 2QF in the Conference Room.  Participants will have an opportunity to see the effects of flooding on the building.
