Disclosure - Helping Children to tell about Sexual Abuse
Tue 6 June 2017, 10:30 – 16:00 BST
This seminar is presented by Rosaleen McElvaney, a Clinical Psychologist with a wealth of experience of working with children and adults who have experienced sexual abuse in Ireland. The seminar will give you insights into current knowledge on disclosure, issues of containing the secret, what we know about child abuse disclosure, and important messages about engagement and helping children to tell their story. The issues of shame and self-blame will be explored.
Rosaleen’s book “ Helping Children to tell about sexual abuse, a guidance for Helpers” was published in 2016
The seminar will provide an overview of research on children and young people’s experiences of child sexual abuse disclosure. Drawing on this research, strategies that professionals can use to facilitate disclosure will be identified.
Participants, on completion of the seminar, will be able to:
Demonstrate a good foundational knowledge of research findings on young people’s experiences of disclosure, with particular reference to the barriers and facilitators to disclosure
Analyse some key practical strategies on how to create opportunities in their own work with children to help children tell
Apply the general principles of facilitating awareness, expression and action to individual children with whom they work
Evaluate their own assumptions and feelings about CSA and disclosure and how these assumptions and feelings influence their conversations about CSA
