Event description

Description

Join us to experience 2 days of ski touring in Scotland with our backcountry ambassador and founder of British-Backcountry.com Blair Aitken.

Blair is an internationally qualified ski instructor and race coach, Mountain Leader, Mountain Bike Leader and European Mountain Security qualified off piste ski-touring guide. He has spent more than a decade in the Alpes, running ski instructor courses and assessments for the British Association of Snowsports Instructors, as well as growing the successful New Generation Ski & Snowboard School in Val d'Isére. Blair is an experienced ski-mountaineer and former alpine national champion who has been backcountry skiing in Scotland since the mid-nineties. He is actively involved in promoting ski-touring amongst British skiers through his British Backcountry Facebook group and the short films that he makes. He is also a competent mountain biker and leads groups in the Lothians, the Tweed valley and the Highlands. Blair now teaches part time in East Lothian and spends his free time exploring Scotland by ski and by bike. He is keen to share his passion for Scotland's wild places with others, and hopes to help people develop the skills needed to better enjoy their time in the mountains. He advises Mountaineering Scotland as part of their Ski Touring Advisory Group and organises events and workshops such as the Winter Opener.

During your 'Discover Backcountry' session the aim will be to introduce you to the Backcountry so that you can then confidently plan further adventures. The exact meeting location will be confirmed a week before and will be dependent on weather but it is hoped that the Ben Lawers range will be suitable for the weekend.

The weekend will be in 2 parts. The first day would be an intro/refresher while on a short journey. The second would be a longer explorer journey. Below is a bit more info about the 2 days:

Day 1: Introduction to the equipment and skills for uphilll skiing (skinning efficiently, kick turns and route choice) Avalanche search and rescue technique (although we will be ski touring in non-avalanche terrain both days these are useful tools for the future) Transition from skinning to skiing. Using ski crampons. We will aim for two or three short climbs and descents, when possible downhill ski technique will be discussed and tactical tips given.

Day 2: A longer journey day putting into practice what was learned on day 1. The aim would be to seek out the best conditions possible on the day.

Accommodation: It is recommended to hold off booking accommodation as the venue will not be confirmed until we know weather forecasts and likely snow cover. If you would prefer to book accommodation in advance it is best to stay in Perth as from there we can travel to all the likely venues within an hour. Perth has a huge number of hotels and B&Bs so take a look on bookings.com.

There is also a train station and Blair may be able to help with transport onward from Perth if you decide to travel by car.

Equipment: Ski touring skis, skins and avalanche kit can be provided but you will need to bring your own ski boots and poles. Please let us know on the sign up form your equipment requirements in advance including the size of your ski boots (so bindings can be adjusted should you want to hire)

Terms and Conditions can be found by visiting https://sites.google.com/view/britishbackcountry/terms-conditions

Partcipants must be able to confidently ski or board red runs and be of good fitness to take part.
