Discover Bats - ecology and detection

By Dorset Wildlife Trust

Overview

Join expert Nick Tomlinson to learn about our bat species and the equipment used to detect and study them.

Aimed at the beginner/novice who wants to delve into the world of bats this workshop will introduce you to these incredible nocturnal creatures and their ecology all guided by a bat expert with an in depth knowledge of the bats at Kingcombe and Dorset.

This evening course will cover a variety of aspects of bat ecology and life history. The basics of bat ecology will be covered, including anatomy, flight, life cycle and echolocation. We will consider this in the context of the 18 species of UK bat, their habitat use, and conservation.

As part of the Dorset Bat Group, tutor Nick has been researching bats in Dorset, and beyond, for over quarter of a century, and leads a number of activities, projects and surveys, helping to increase our understanding of these amazing creatures. He also runs a number of training events and courses, including being co-tutor of the Bat Conservation Trusts Advanced Bat Survey Techniques course.

The Kingcombe Meadows Nature Reserve, which surrounds the Kingcombe Visitor Centre, is famed for its wide-ranging habitats and species and was designated a National Nature Reserve in 2021.
