Event description
Join us on our Open-to-All Tour as we uncover one of the most fascinating towns in Britain with a rich history that might surprise you!

About this Event

Like many towns on the 'Old London Road' from Dover to the capital, Gravesend occupies a special place in the history of Great Britain.

The Romans knew it as a port, in Medieval times in was the subject of feudal conflicts, during the Tudor age it became of strategic importance to the entire country, a native American Princess' short life ended here, a maverick Victorian soldier left a huge mark on the town - and one of the biggest secrets of WW2 was constructed here. And there's that hardy perennial - the name itself!!

You can see the signs of all of that in a relatively small area to this day!

2020 is officially #DickensOneFifty year - on 9th June it will be 150 years since the death of England's finest novelist, Charles Dickens. Along the walk, we'll be taking in a couple of Dickens-related locations in the town centre, plus pointing you in the direction of the other Dickens locations in the villages surrounding Gravesend.

Join us for a journey back in time that might surprise you - and make you look at Gravesend in a whole new light!

ABOUT OUR OPEN WALKING TOURS - These walks are open to anyone aged 8 or over, and groups of up to FOUR persons. If you wish to bring a larger group, a deposit is required (email us at rhwt.uk@gmail.com for more details)

There is an affordable ticket price - JUST £2.50 per person - as we want as many people as possible to learn about our wonderful old city.

However, if you feel your guide has given you an exceptional experience, at the end of the tour you are always welcome to offer them a gratuity if you wish.

If you would prefer a tour for adults only, and limited to smaller numbers, please look at our Small Group Tours on our Eventbrite organisers page.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THE GRAVESEND WALKING TOUR IS LENGTHY. Please allow 3 hours for the walk (we will be taking rest breaks along the way)

Children MUST be at least 8 years of age.
