About this event
Are you curious about research? Do you want to learn more about how mental health research takes place, and how you can get involved?
The South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s Research and Development team invite you to join our ‘Discover Research’ events!
This is a chance to explore mental health research together – to talk about what it is, hear your thoughts, questions and concerns, and share how it can make a difference.
The events will be facilitated by mental health research professionals and people with lived experience of mental ill health. They will include activities, games and refreshments .We want to help demystify research, and encourage conversations around:
- What is research and how does it work?
- What are the barriers to participation in research?
- What would help people get more involved in research?
Programme:
12:00 – 12:30 – Introduction and talk from a research participant or researcher
12:30 – 12:45 – Lunch
12:45 – 13:45 – Table-top activities, games and conversations
14:00 – Event ends
Research at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
Our goal is for everyone who uses the Trust’s services to get the chance to take part in research. In 2024-25, over 6.4k people took part in a study, making us the top mental health Trust in England for the number of service users involved in research!
The feedback we receive shows that participants enjoy and benefit enormously from research, however, we need to ensure that all groups are equally represented. To do that, we want to address barriers and bust myths around research participation.

With research at the core of our clinical care, we strive to constantly improve our services. We are developing innovative new ways of treating mental health, working closely with world leading partners, especially the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience, King's College London.
Visit our blog to read examples of how research is contributing to improving our services.
By getting involved in research you can help shape the future of mental healthcare!
