About this event

Health • Mental health

Have you ever wondered what research means in mental health? Do you want to learn what research is happening at the Trust, how it works and how you can get involved?

Come and meet the Research Delivery Team at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust. We will explore mental health research together – talk about what it is, hear your thoughts, questions and concerns, and share how it can make a difference.

The events will be led by mental health research professionals and people with lived experience of mental ill health. They will include activities, games and refreshments.

We want to help demystify research, and encourage conversations around:

  • What is research and why does it matter
  • How to take part in a study
  • What might stop people from joining research
  • What could help more people get involved

Programme:

12:00 – 12:30 – Introductions, refreshments and talk from a research participant or researcher

12:30 – 12:45 – Lunch

12:45 – 13:45 – Table-top activities, games and conversations

14:00 – Event ends

Research at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust

Research is how we learn new things to improve mental health care. It can involve answering questions, testing new treatments, or finding better ways to support people.

At South London and Maudsley, we believe everyone who uses our services should have the chance to get involved in research. In 2024–25, more than 6,400 people joined a study, making us the leading mental health Trust in England for research participation.

People tell us that being part of research is a positive and rewarding experience. But we know not everyone gets the same opportunity. We want to change that - by breaking down barriers and clearing up common myths about research.

Read Keri's story: “Your involvement does truly matter and makes a difference”

Research is an important part of the care and services we offer. It helps us improve treatments and develop new ways to understand and support people with mental ill health. We work closely with world-class partners like the Institute of Psychiatry, Psychology & Neuroscience at King’s College London. Visit our blog to read examples of how research is improving our services.

By getting involved in research you can help shape the future of mental healthcare.

This event is open to:

  • Anyone who has accessed services at South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust
  • Anyone who cared for someone who has accessed services (this includes people who provide support as family and friends)

All are welcome - you don’t need to know anything about research to join.
