Event description
Castle Street, Liverpool City Centre

About this event

Castle street was one of Liverpool’s original seven streets and has been at the heart of life in the area since then.

This walk will examine how the street has developed, changed and grown from its early days, through its time as the heart of Liverpool’s commercial life, to what some would now argue is Liverpool’s ‘civic square’ – lined with outdoor cafes - in line with other great European cities.

Highlights include John Wood’s Georgian Town Hall, Charles Cockerell’s Neo Classical late 1840’s Bank of England Building, Norman Shaw’s late Victorian Parr’s Bank building, Caroe’s 1892 Adelphi Bank, Herbert Rowse’s Art Deco Martin’s Bank Building, Huws’s Piazza Fountain, The Queen Victoria monument and the location of Liverpool’s remaining Sanctuary Stone.

Starts: Nelson Memorial at the back of Liverpool Town Hall on Exchange Flags Finishes: Nelson Memorial

Please assemble from 5.45pm for a 6pm start. The walk will last approximately 90 minutes.
