Event description

Description

Wiltshire Museum Director David Dawson will lead us on the first visit to the grounds of Devizes Castle, perhaps the town’s best-kept secret and hitherto strictly closed to the public. The original castle, built in 1080 and of which only traces remain, was at the heart of English history until it was ‘slighted’ after the Civil War and replaced with a Victorian ‘Folly’. Our visit will begin with a preview of the Exhibition Telling Wiltshire’s story: 30 years of support from the Art Fund at The Wiltshire Museum, which includes works by Henry Moore, John Piper and David Inshaw and gold and silver Roman coins of the Stanchester Hoard together with the vessel in which they were found, specially restored for this exhibition. After lunch at the Museum, we will divide into two groups for guided tours alternately of The Castle Grounds and the adjacent Church of St John the Baptist, originally the Castle’s Chapel.

Please note the Castle Grounds have many steep and uneven flights of steps so anyone requiring a walking aid of any kind will not be admitted.
