Welcome to Russell Square in Bloomsbury. This tour is another in my new series, Discovering London's Squares. Russell was the family name of the Dukes of Bedford, and it has so many interesting and captivating stories associated with it. Only a few minutes from the British Museum, this leafy garden square is one of London's largest. Each side has contrasting styles of architecture, and accompanying tales of the rich and famous from the 18th century onwards.
Highlights include:
- the setting for some of literature's most popular novels
- one of the last surviving Victorian taxi shelters
- the house where Oscar Wilde spent his final night
- the iconic, art-deco Senate House
- residences of an opera singer, abolitionist and suffragette
- the most stunning hotel exterior in London with a unique link to the Titanic!
So join me on another fascinating guided walk through one of London's favourite squares.
