Event description

Description

The Darent Valley is indelibly associated with one of the greatest of English Romantic artists, Samuel Palmer. For a brief period whilst he resided in Shoreham, the landscape inspired some of the most intense paintings in the history of British art. Few landscapes in England are so closely associated with a single artist.

Today, Palmer provides the inspiration for the Darent Valley Landscape Partnership, a scheme that is working to conserve, protect and promote enjoyment of the area. Join the scheme manager, Rick Bayne, to follow in the steps of Palmer in the heart of the Darent Valley almost 200 years ago. This was a time when the valley was considered deepest rural Kent, and yet many of the views and natural landscapes remain much as they were then.

The 7 mile walk will start at Otford station (we encourage you to travel by train), following the North Downs Way with a short diversion to view the remaining tower of Otford Palace. The official residence of Archbishop Warham, this building rivalled (and was actually larger than) Hampton Court Palace. Passing the village of Otford, we will follow the Darent Valley Path northward, never straying far from the River Darent, before reaching the village of Shoreham. From here we climb the side of the valley to reveal extensive views, with an opportunity to explore several chalk grassland reserves that are benefitting from the work of the Darent Valley Landscape Partnership.

Finally we descend Otford Mount along the North Downs Way to return to Otford Station.

Please be aware that there are some steep hills on this walk, but we will follow the pace of the slowest person. We won't leave anyone behind! Please bring sturdy footwear and dress appropriately for the forecasted weather.
